About Moments Cafe

In 2010, nurses Kate Smith and Laura Walker, frustrated with the lack of good quality support for people living with dementia, decided to take the plunge and start Memory Matters; an organisation that aims to compassionately support those living with dementia, providing top quality therapy and respite care.

Memory Matters believe in providing support in small groups or on a one-to-one basis to ensure that every single person is known. We will get to know people’s history, their beliefs about the world and importantly their perspective which can often be affected by dementia.

Kate and Laura wanted to grow their service and find a sustainable solution that would benefit more people. The idea for Moments Café and Hub came from one of our non-executive directors in 2015. The idea grew from there and we started looking into how it would work. We spoke to lots of people from all walks of life, including people living with dementia, as well as their carers.

“The outcomes for people living with dementia are fantastic. Those we support are engaged, happy and building friendships whilst also giving their carers a break.”

We wanted the Café to be well designed, easy to navigate but comfortable and user friendly for everyone to enjoy. The Café is a place that is fun to be in, with good quality food where every customer contributes to their community by supporting people living with dementia just by eating here. All profits from the Café support the running of services for people living with dementia as well as our Memory Matters Hub situated above the Café.

The Café & Hub is supported by Plymouth City Councils Social Enterprise Investment Fund.
